Yamato, named after the ancient Japanese Yamato Province, was the lead ship of the Yamato class of battleships that served with the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. On 7 April 1945 she was sunk by American carrier-based bombers and torpedo bombers with the loss of most of her crew.

Designed in 1927, and built as lightly as possible, to exempt the ship from the restrictions of the Washington naval treaty, Ryujo was not a success....she was far too small(8000 tons designed displacement) to carry many aircraft, and the Japanese chose to rectify this by simply adding another hanger atop the original one! weight was kept down by virtually eliminating all protection, but the additional topweight meant that she suffered all her life from stability problems.  later on the…
