1974 Volkswagen 181 Thing. The Volkswagen Type 181 was a two-wheel drive, four-door, convertible, off-road, military vehicle manufactured by Volkswagen from 1968 to 1983. Originally developed for the German Army, the Type 181 was also sold to the public, as the Kurierwagen in Germany, the Trekker in the United Kingdom, the Thing in the United States (1973-1974), and the Safari in Mexico. Civilian sales ended after model year 1980.
Army PFC Cole W. Larsen, 19, of Canyon Country, California. Died November 13, 2004, serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Assigned to 272nd Military Police Company, 21st Theater Support Command, Mannheim, Germany. Died of injuries sustained when a civilian vehicle struck his military vehicle causing it to roll over in Baghdad, Iraq.
