QUEEN KAPI’OLANI’S FAN QUILT, early 20th century (Hawaii) . A good photo. A single-piece applique feather and fan design in red on white background with floral applique border. It has close contour hand-quilting. American Museum Bath: Classic Quilts Research; photo by feesiebaby (UK)
Hawaiian quilts are a bit different than traditional ones, but very beautiful. Remember how you folded a piece of paper several times, then cut designs out, and unfolded it to get a snowflake? Same idea... just use fabric, and applique onto another piece of fabric. Start with a pillow!
