The kingdom of Axum was a naval and trading power that ruled from about 400 BC into the 10th century. The kingdom was also identified as Abyssinia, Ethiopia, and India in medieval writings. The Stelae are perhaps the most identifiable part of the Aksumite legacy. These stone towers served to mark graves or represent a magnificent building. They are stabilized by massive underground counter-weights. They were often engraved with a pattern or emblem denoting the king's or the noble's rank.
