American Civil War Enlisted Uniforms -The two sides are often referred to by the color of their official uniforms, blue for the Union, gray for the Confederates. Battle of Long Island , August 27, 1776. The scene depicts Captain Samuel Smith leading what remains of his company of Marylanders into the Gowanus marsh along the South side of the millpond to escape the overwhelming British onslaught. His unit did not cross the Gowanus Creek with the rest of the Patriot forces but crossed the millpond by ferrying themselves over on slab (whatever that is).
