After the War of 1812, a review of the nation's forts determined it necessary to replace Fort Adams with a larger fort. Construction of the new fort began in 1824 and continued until 1857. The fort was in use from 1841 through 1950. In 1965, the fort became a state park and in 1994 the Fort Adams Trust was founded to maintain and offer tours of the fort.
