The ankh, also known as key of life, the key of the Nile or crux ansata (Latin meaning "cross with a handle"), was the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic character that read "eternal life", a triliteral sign for the consonants ꜥ-n-ḫ. Mechanical Dog, ivory, ca. 1390–1353 B.C.E. Egypt. New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, reign of Amenhotep III. The Met.Mus.of Art.  This leaping hunting dog can be made to open and close its mouth using the lever beneath the chest. When the mouth is opened, two teeth and a red tongue are visible.
