1936 Audi Wanderer W 25 K Roadster (photo above) -- The Wanderer originated from the machinery factory Winklhofer & Jänicke, established in Chemnitz in 1896. Motorcycles were built from 1902 onwards and cars shortly after that. With export in mind, the more international sounding name "Wanderer" was adopted in 1911. During the Depression in 1929 the bank decided to dismantle the company which was in dire straits.
1938 Audi Wanderer W 25 K Roadster (photo above) -- The motorcycle arm was sold off and the car division was merged with DKW, Horch and Audi to form the Auto Union. Within this organisation the Wanderer was ranked in the "upper middle class". One of the four rings in the current Audi logo still represents Wanderer, which ceased to exist following the division of Germany after the war.
