Wow. There is this whole brilliant thing with dying sock blanks. They come with two threads knitted together, so that your socks will come out matchy, no matter how complicated the design. Any stretch of knitting will do, though, if you aren't planning for socks. There is a group on Ravelry called Sock Blank Artists that has a lot of cool info on the subject.

Once upon a time, Cambridge was a serious textile production hub... however, like most things, this has been sent offshore.
