It doesn't look like much; a sloping field near Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia. Yet here is the Mule Shoe and Bloody Angle of terrible memory. A Confederate salient in the shape of said Mule Shoe was assaulted and driven in during 20 hours of hand-to-hand fighting in driving rain until Confederate engineers established a line behind the salient and the men could retreat. A place of concentrated horror to rival a WW1 battlefield in Europe.
