Twenty-three year old Albert (Bert) Carlton suffering from TB moved to Colorado Springs in 1889 with his parents. He then moved in 1892 to Cripple Creek hoping that the higher altitude would be more beneficial. There he opened with his brothers a small business the Colorado Trading & Transfer Company to haul freight. Quickly he became involved in the mining industry and acquainted with Spencer Penrose and his partners MacNeill and Tutt.
