In the fall of 1903, the wedding of Princess Alice of Battenburg and Prince Andrew of Greece took place in Hesse. Ella's Russian cousins, Olga, Tatiana, Marie, and Anastasia came for the wedding. The little girls played together often and Olga and Ella were best friends. One morning Olga complained that her nurse treated her like a baby for keeping her in bed while Ella got to watch a game. Ella replied "You will see it very often, but I shall never again see it."

Grand Duchess Olga, Princess Elisabeth of Hesse, Grand Duchess Tatiana. Princess Elisabeth of Hesse was first cousins to the Grand Duchesses and died while on holiday with them at age 8 of virulent typhoid.

All the Romanovs were fond of photos. This postcard shows Empress Alexandra Feodorovna (left) standing, holding a camera and facing her children. The children are (left-right) Grand Duchess Olga, Grand Duchess Anastasia (on top of a Shetland horse), Grand Duchess Tatiana, Grand Duchess Marie and Tsarevitch Alexei. This postcard was sent by her to her cousin, George, Prince of Wales (future George V) as a Christmas and New Year card for 1906/1907.

Grand Duke Michael “Misha" Alexandrovich - in reality the last Tsar of Russia by a few hours. He became such upon the abdication of his brother, Tsar Nicholas II on 15 March [O.S. 2 March] 1917 - who also abdicated on behalf of his sickly son Alexei. Michael was a Tsar from the moment of his brothers abdication until his own. He was murdered by the Bolsheviks on June 13, 1918 (aged 39).
