Machu Pikchu in Quechua means "old peak" is a 15th-century Inca site located 2,430 metres above sea level. It is situated on a mountain ridge above the Sacred Valley which is 80 kilometres northwest of Cusco and through which the Urubamba River flows. Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472). Often mistakenly referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas", it is perhaps the most familiar icon of Inca civilization.

Santa Marta, Colombia -- La Ciudad Perdida (The Lost City). Hidden (literally) in the crevices of northern Colombia’s Santa Marta Sierra Nevada mountain range, La Ciudad Perdida was built by the Tayrona people around 800 AD. Although built approximately 600 years before Machu Picchu, it was “discovered” by looters on the hunt for treasure in 1975 (60 years after Machu Picchu’s “discovery”).
