This is often called the LA FONDA ARM CHAIR because the Eames Office developed this design in part as a response to a request from long time Charles and Ray Eames friend ALEXANDER GIRARD for a particular type of seating for a restaurant, LA FONDA DEL SOL, he was designing for the New York City Time-Life Building. Girard wondered if he could have seating where the seat backs wouldnt be that much higher than the table tops.
Charles & Ray Eames, 1958 Aluminium Group EA 115 / 116 The Aluminium Chair is one of the greatest furniture designs of the 20th century. The Aluminium Chair stands out for its intelligent combination of materials. The covers are attached inside the aluminium profile sections and simply stretched over the frame, transforming them from mere coverings to a load-bearing part of the structure. It adapts to fit the body snugly and delivers great comfort, even without extensive upholstery.
