Born a Russian Jew in Ottawa, Canada, Lorne Greene served as a flying officer in the Royal Canadian Airforce and was assigned the role of “The Voice of Canada” on the CBC National News. Eventually he became known as the “The Voice of Doom” due to his low-pitched, deep voice delivering the names of those lost in World War II. As such a prominent piece of the war, Lorne even invented a stopwatch that ran backwards to show how much time he had left on the air.
