Captain Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922) was an Anglo-Irish explorer, now chiefly remembered for his Antarctic expedition of 1914-1916 in the ship Endurance. 1922: The monument to Irish explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton on the main island of South Georgia. He died of a heart attack and was burried there in 1922, having returned to the spot on the 'Quest', six years after his famous Antarctic Expedition.
