3rd Street - Looking northeast from north side of Third, just east of Main. Shows salt barrels, horse-drawn wagons.June, 1868 - KC cast a grim image before snaring the prize (Hannibal Bridge). The town also had fewer people than Leavenworth or St. Joseph, and it was barely keeping pace with Atchison, KS. All 4 cities wanted that first span over the Missouri. Yet this city was second to none in salesmanship, a talent probably born of desperation.
