Art director Cedric Gibbons’s sets captured the Moderne glamour of the 1920s and ’30s in films such as The Single Standard (1929), starring Greta Garbo. One of the first to abandon painted backdrops, Gibbons created a vast space for Garbo’s character’s sleek grand salon. "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.” Who could forget the opening line from Rebecca? I've always be fascinated by this old gothic romance film by Hitchcock, made in 1939. I saw it in my preteens and still love it and the original book by Daphne du Maurier. I reread it just this past summer.
