Giudizio universale, Michelangelo. The Last Judgment is a canonical fresco by the Italian Renaissance master Michelangelo executed on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. The work took four years to complete and was done between 1536 and 1541. Michelangelo began working on it some twenty years after having finished the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
On April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to declare war against Germany, saying, "The world must be made safe for democracy." Four days later, Congress voted overwhelmingly in favor of a war declaration. The U.S. had gradually been drawn into the war by factors including German submarine aggression and the Zimmerman Telegram, sent by the German Foreign Minister to Germany's Mexican ambassador, promising to help Mexico reclaim U.S. land in exchange for support in the war.
