Baseball history photo: 1887 - Long-time Philadelphia Phillies catcher Jack Clements, a left-handed thrower, demonstrates his catching technique. All catchers wore masks by the 1880's; however the gloves depicted are all that were worn during games. Clements played 16 seasons and appeared in 1157 games before retiring after the 1900 season. Note the shape and position of the pre-1900 home base.
