Follow Garry Gottfriedson in this new collection of combative poems as he compels us and Heaven to listen to the challenges facing First Nation communities today. Employing many of the Secwepemc (Shuswap) images and stories, Gottfriedson takes us inside the rez and into the rooming houses in the city cores, but always drawing new strength from the land and the people who have moved upon it. He speaks of “the smell of grandmothers and grandfathers / breathing the stories into our blood” so as…

Confessor Art I wonder how Ib explained Garry to her parents. They’d probably dismiss Ib’s incident at the gallery as a result of her “overactive imagination”, and, let’s face it, no loving parent doesn’t get suspicious when an older guy is trying to interact with their young daughter. I bet Garry felt very dejected being misinterpreted that way, but it makes me laugh every time I imagine it.

Grandmaster Garry Kasparov was an inspiration to Ugandan chess phenom Phiona Mutesi. So how’d the 17-year-old do against him in a match at the fourth-annual Women in the World Summit? Mutesi is from the slums of Katwe. Her father died of AIDS when she was 3 years old, and she began to play the game as a way to earn cups of porridge. In an interview she told The Daily Beast that she likes chess because “It’s about planning. If I wanted to survive, I had to plan.”

Gary Winogrand - In this piece, I feel that Winogrand captured the simplistic element of childhood. This image for me is very successful. I feel that because he didn't include the little girl's face, just the balloons was perfect because it simply speaks the truth and is to the point. Very striking.
