Sabine Pass Lighthouse by LSUgusto, via Flickr ~ a historic lighthouse in Cameron Parish, LA, on the Louisiana side of the Sabine River. The lighthouse went into operation in 1857 and remained lit for 95 years, with the exception of a brief period during the U.S. Civil War. The light was permanently extinguished by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1952. The keeper's house and wooden outbuilding were destroyed by a marsh fire in the 1970s. The original copper lantern housing was stolen in 1979.
