The Amazing Art of Disabled Artists

Richard Wawro was a prominent and prolific autistic savant artist from the United Kingdom. He began drawing at the age of three, and immediately covered the chalkboard with a number of detailed images.

Richard Wawro: When he was six his mother took him to Molly Leishman, a special needs teacher with a reputation for taking on children rejected as too difficult by other specialist schools. She recognised his genius with his first picture. "What I saw was magic," she recalled. Leishman took examples of her prodigy's work for professional advice, without mentioning his autism. To her delight, her hopes were confirmed.

Richard Wawro was a remarkable Scottish artist who earned widespread acclaim for his detailed drawings created with the unusual medium of wax oil crayons. With these he produced exceedingly detailed, dramatic images of intense depth and colour. Richard died at age 56 in 2006 after a brave fight against cancer. This site is dedicated to his memory.
