A large flock of Red-winged Blackbirds were roosting in the shelterbelts between stubble fields a little east of town at a place called Buckstop Junction. It's so cool that this jet black bird with the slightest band of yellow on his wing exposes a big, bright red patch on each wing as he takes flight. I also saw at least half a dozen more Northern Flickers in that field! 4-3-12
A northern flicker leaving nest cavity. Seven hungry newly-hatched chicks open their beaks as widely as possible as a male woodpecker takes a peek at his young. The Northern Flicker, part of the woodpecker family.
