FIRST MISSION, by Nixon Galloway - The initial offensive air operation conducted by the U.S. Army Air Forces in the European Theatre was on 4 July 1942. The only unit in place was a light bomber squadron being tutored by the RAF, the 15th bomb Squadron. It had to borrow Douglas Bostons from the RAF, No. 226 Squadron. The operation called for 12 Bostons, six of which would be manned by USAAF crews of the 15th. Targets: 4 Luftwaffe airfields in occupied Holland, to be attacked at low level.
