Happy International Tiger Day! (July 29th) Sadly wild #Tiger populations have diminished by 97% since 1913, 100 years ago. Today there are just over 3000 wild tigers scattered across Asia and Russia. But in the face of poachers and threats to their habitat, responsible tourism is the best way to protect these amazing animals paired with conservation and international co-operation. Let’s hope future generations grow up in a world big enough for both humans and tigers!
Tigers are the most variable in size of all big cats, even more so than leopards and much more so than lions. The Bengal, Caspian and Siberian tiger subspecies represent the largest living felids, and rank among the biggest felids that ever existed. Body size of different populations seems to be correlated with climate—Bergmann's Rule—and can be explained from the point of view of thermoregulation.
One of the most beautiful photographs of one of the most beautiful animals I've ever seen. It just makes me want to reach out and throw my arms around this big cat. Love it. Kudos to the photographer. Tiger by Mark B, via 500px
