Indonesia, Borneo (Kalimantan), Bahau Dayak: A mask. A very unusual old mask of Bahau Dayak made of heavy, hard wood (usually the Bahau masks are carved from lightweight, light-coloured wood). Of typical form with heart-shaped face, small eyes with pierced pupils, long ears and an accentuated forward-protracted, pointed and open mouth with teeth. The whole mask is secondarily painted in white. Underlaid with an older black ground and a very old patina (also inside!).
