"Do what thy manhood bids thee do, From none but self expect applause: He noblest lives and noblest dies Who makes and keeps his self-made laws." (Sir Richard Francis Burton) Frederic Lord Leighton, 1872
Sir Richard Burton, 1821-90. Burton was a British soldier and explorer who must stand as one of the most extraordinary people who ever lived. He spoke 29 languages, discovered the great lakes of Africa in a famous partnership with John Hanning Speke, and entered the cities of Mecca and Medina at a time when foreigners were strictly forbidden.
