James Hunter Blair (1741–1787) with his wife and family, David Allan (1744–1796). The portrait is reputed to have cost 75 guineas, relatively inexpensive, even for this artist. Allan wrote to the 11th Earl of Buchan in December 1780 that his general price was 10 guineas a figure. In this instance, he may have charged less on account of nine of the eleven portraits being of the sitter’s young children. BFA Five Hundred Years of Scottish Portraiture Exhibition.
