The Australian coastline, and consequently the Australian surfer, is blessed with an abundance of amazing waves ranging from epic, leg-burning points, to heavy reefs and A-Frame beach breaks. However, most of us, at times, are guilty of becoming complacent in our search for our next perfect wave. Our local selection of spots become our norm, we know what to expect and we put up with the crowds, its comfortable, easy and regular. But, for those with a yearning for adventure and discovery…

Catch-of-the-day - Kalk Bay is home to the tiny but locally famous surf spot named "Kalk Bay Reef". This is renowned for heavy barrels and the associated shallow reef. It is best surfed on a big south-easterly swell or a north west wind. In smaller swells low tide makes for better barrels. Southern right whales come here during whale watching seasons, and are often seen playing or resting very close to surfers or piers.

Escambron Beach, also known as “La Ocho,” is a local spot offering surfers the chance to catch some swell while nearby coral reefs maintain calmer waters for snorkelers. Tall palm trees create cozy shade for a post-paddle nap or picnic table lunch. A short walk on the beach will lead you to Escambron Battery, a small fortification built at the end of the 18th century.

Paul Morgan is a great Australian Surfer better known for charging his big local reefs. Got an invite down one swell and they took me out to this reef he and his buddies love to tow when its big. He actually paddles this one. Looks like Pipe to a degree just colder and way less crowded with surfers and photogs. Photo: Nate Smth
