This is a real life reproduction (complete with furnished interior!) of Satsuki and Mei's house from "My Neighbor Totoro";. Apparently it was built back in 2005 For the World's Fair near Nagoya, Japan and was designed by Hayao Miyazaki's son Gorō.
Students learn how to budget while learning the general costs of what they would be expected to pay if they were to live on their own. This is a useful project for students in a career-related course or other subject area where simple math or real life examples are needed.
This is great for an end of the year activity! Students can work alone or in groups to complete. Students use real world newspapers, magazines, or pictures in order to find where math is used in real life. They will have to create a collage of their pictures.
