Cast on an additional 5 stitches on either side to do a knit in seed stitch button band. I struggled to pick up the stitches under the arms. When I separated the sleeves from the body, I did a backwards loop cast on of 5 stitches under each arm. Next time I will do a knitted cast in for greater stability.

Aran cast off the buttonhole band using the larger needle and a stretchy cast off technique (several on the web - the one I used was knit 2 stitches, insert left hand needle through front of these 2 stitches on right hand needle, loop wool around back needle and draw through. Takes a bit longer but avoids any possible snerping of the fabric.)
