Otosclerosis is a disease of bone affecting the ear. Normally, sound, a vibration of air molecules, is transmitted to the tympanic membrane, or eardrum. The drum vibrates as do the three bones of hearing, the malleus, incus and stapes. These three bones are suspended in the middle ear and are connected like a chain to the vibrating tympanic membrane. This is Khaki, a 4 year old female King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. Khaki suffers from a condition known as “progressive secretory otitis media”, also known as PSOM. This is when a mucus like material builds up in the middle ear, putting pressure on the ear drum and also on the inner ear. Khaki has seen Dr. Karin Beale in our dermatology department to help with her condition. Now she can hear it when the cookie jar opens!
