Air Force Missile Site 8 - That Nearly Began World War 3 Also known as Titan II ICBM Site 571-7, this missile silo has a lot of historical heritage. Built in the heart of the Arizona Desert, it was a top secret facility operated by the US Air Force. Built at the height of the Cold War (1963), it is now certain that its enormous, 103 ft (31m) Titan II missile was pointed at the USSR. Located about 15 miles south of Tucson, this large 8 level installation is now a museum.
Developed in the ‘60s at the height of the Cold War, it remains the fastest of its kind till this very day. Its propulsion system was so powerful that it required an overhaul after a single high-speed mission. It could operate at unrivaled elevations, was ridiculously expensive to operate and its very existence sent the US into a frenzy trying to counter it.
