George Remus is said to have been the model for the title character in Fitzgeralds "The Great Gatsby." At the onset of Prohibition in 1920, Remus was a Chicago criminal defense lawyer. When he saw many of his clients become wealthy by bootlegging, he began doing it himself. In Cincinnati, he earned the title "King of the Bootleggers," lived in a lavish mansion in Price Hill and spent millions in bribes to police and public officials.
