An Egyptian painted mummy shroud is undergoing an exciting conservation treatment. Over the next few months, Rita Berg will be discussing various stages along the way.  To help characterize materials used to create the shroud, it was examined using a non-destructive technology known as X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF).  In this case, analysis aided conservators in identifying or confirming pigments used by Ancient Egyptians and also shed light on a previous restorations. Renaissance painting restoration leads to unusual collaboration

Removal of the varnish layer in the cleaning process can be monitored under ultraviolet fluorescence during the cleaning phase of the restoration. Later this year at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, X-rays will identify elements in minute paint samples so scholars can trace the geographic origin of minerals in the paint.
