Joana Vasconcelos installation at the Palace of Versailles, 2012, included glamorous objects made of humble materials: feathered helicopters, ceramic lobsters, giant fabric sculptures, outsize hearts built with plastic cutlery. She dedicated the exhibition to the Portuguese women who work in Paris as concierges.
New Jersey-born artist Grace Hartigan studied mechanical drafting at an engineering school before making her entry into the art world. While working as a draftsman in a factory, she studied painting and fell in love with Matisse. She made her way to New York City, embracing the movement alongside Pollock and De Kooning.
