IDEA: juneau alaska A tip: While the cruise lines sell excursions to the Mendenhall Glacier on charter buses, often with a brief bus tour of the city, wait until you get to Juneau and take the "Blue Bus". There are several school buses, painted blue (obviously), that run from the cruise ship docks to the Glacier and back, departing at each end about every half hour. You'll see pretty much everything you'd see on the "tour", but the cost for a ticket on the Blue Bus is about 8 bucks return.
Located only 12 miles from downtown Juneau, the vividly colored ice caves of the Mendenhall Glacier are among the most spectacular sites on Earth. They are accessible to visitors willing to make a kayak journey, then a long hike and ice climb.
Get back to Alaska but this time with my family and show them how amazing it is to stand in this field of flowers and see the awesome blue of the Mendenhall Glacier and the white snow capped mountains all in the same scene.
