The Widow Lincoln | The Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection - After President Lincoln’s death, Mary Todd Lincoln clung to her youngest son, Thomas “Tad” Lincoln. The mother-son duo was inseparable. Mary and Tad traveled across Europe together to escape the public scrutiny at home and to properly grieve. On the voyage home, Tad contracted a cold, which led to pleurisy. Tad died in Chicago on July 15, 1871. Facing the death of a third child, Mary was inconsolable.
