August 1960. Capt Kittinger jumping from the Excelsior gondola at 102,800 feet, more than 31 kilometres (19 mile), setting a world record. He was also the first man to make a solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a gas balloon. He served as a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War, and was shot down, spending 11 months as a POW in a North Vietnamese prison. In 2012, age 84, he participated in the Red Bull Stratos project as capsule communicator, directing Felix Baumgartner.
