Marines and corpsmen scramble ashore and seek any cover they can to escape the incoming murderous enemy mortar and artillery fire. Behind them, smoking and abandoned, are amphibian tractors which were hit as they approached the beach.

DEATH VALLEY was first entered by 7th Marines on D-plus 7, in an attempt to seize Five Sisters right from southwest. Battle of Peleliu WW II  9-15-1944--10-15-1944 The battle was officially known as Operation Stalemate II but the survivors still call it The Forgotten Battle. It was one of the last big Pacific battles of World War II and one of the bloodiest. Even the names associated with this small coral strip of land in the Palau islands sound hostile and discordant:
