Debo, the Duchess of Devonshire, was laid to rest in a wicker casket. Mourned by royalty, nobility, cooks, cleaners, the Bakewell Women’s Institute, the 1st Tupton Scout Group, poultry fanciers, dry stone wallers and a hillside of ramblers, Britain’s best-known dowager embarked on her last and grandest journey yesterday, to the sound of Elvis Presley. Debo, who died aged 94, was laid to rest at the the Derbyshire estate which stands as a monument to her determination.
