NASA releases composite image showing Earth-like surface of Saturn's largest moon, Titan.

Stunning Pictures Show an Alien Moon Eerily Like Earth. A composite picture from the Cassini spacecraft cuts through Titan's haze to show the moon's surface. [Titan is Saturn's largest moon]

Lines of dunes crawl across the surface of Titan, Saturn's largest moon, in a radar image showing dunes as dark. Experiments at ASU's wind tunnel indicate the dune particles move only under winds that blow stronger than scientists previously thought. Data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft show that the sizes and patterns of dunes on Saturn's moon Titan vary as a function of altitude and latitude. Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech, and NASA/GSFC/METI/ERSDAC/JAROS and U.S./Japan ASTER Science Team

Images from the Cassini spacecraft currently orbiting Saturn have uncovered long rows of huge sand dunes near Titan's equator that rise as high as 300 meters. Shadows indicate that most dune shapes are created by wind blowing from the west.
