Gardel was born under the name Charles Romuald Gardes in Tolouse, France. Gardel lived in Argentina from the age of two, and three decades later he acquired Argentine citizenship in 1923.  Killed in plane crash in Colombia in 1935 at the height of his career at the age of 44.  Still a figure of Elvis-like cultural importance in Argentina.
