Day 27 of Women's History Month features New York Times food editor Jane Nickerson. Her work is often overshadowed by Craig Claiborne at the NYT. He is given credit for including news in the food section in 1957 but Jane had been doing that since World War II. After her "retirement" from the NYT in 1957, she spent many years as the food editor at the NYT-owned Lakeland Ledger. She also wrote a cookbook.
Voltz was a hard news reporter during World War II, like a lot of women journalists, Voss said. She married a sports reporter and had two children. After moving to Miami, she went to the doctor, Voss said, “and the doctor said, Jeanne, I think staying home is too strenous for you. Why don’t you go back to being a reporter?”
