The Puritans came to America in an effort to “purify” their church.  The phrase “Puritan” is actually a slang term, as they were actually called “Separatists”.  The intent of coming to the new land was to create a new society which focused on the teachings in the Bible instead of the traditions created by the church.  Since they focused on separating from the unsavory elements they were trying to escape, they were very stringent in their punishments.
