Sliced agate windows in Grossmunster Church, Zurich, Switzerland, German artist, Sigmar Polke. Seven windows depicting five figures from the Old Testament were created out of sliced agate, forming luminous rounds of variegated stone. The agate, most commonly associated with volcanic rock, is millions of years old, and was treated with special pigments to transform its normally earth-toned colouration, bringing a Murano glass-like quality to the windows of this 12th century Romanesque church.
