1896 Leon Bollee Voiturette The Bollée name is important in auto history. Amédée Bollée built some of the earliest road-going (not on rails) steam carriages known; 4 steam cars, first in 1873 & the last in 1881. 2 vehicles are in museums. He lived in the little town Le Mans & here founded Automobiles Léon Bollée in 1895. 1896 was the first year for the “Voiturette, a single-cylinder engine mounted horizontally beside & to rear of the driver, who sat in back – passenger(s) rode in front.
