Woven chairs used by Mathsson in place of traditional spring upholstery were innovative for the time. The design of the 'Eva Chair' (above) was originally commissioned to Mathsson by a hospital in Sweden. His innovative design was unorthodox for 1930 and hospital staff found the chairs so ugly that they referred to them as "Grasshoppers." They went into storage and traditional furniture used. If you're wondering on the value of his designs today- see above for the price of 2 "grasshoppers".
