Fractions 2nd Grade - Fraction Fun with Games & Activities to Identify Fractions

Do you find fractions to be a difficult concept for your young learners? Learning about halves, quarters, equal and unequal, it's a lot to take in! What we know about young learners is they will hold onto information better if they are having fun while learning it. These fun and interactive activities are a great way to target tricky concepts. Check out the blog post to read more. This pack contains a structured approach to teaching your fraction unit; one that introduces the topic and then reinforces it with fun learning activities. Begin with teaching your year one or year two students to identify equal and unequal parts (this part is crucial in the early understanding of fractions). Move on to teaching wholes and halves, quarters and finally thirds. These activities make sure your class understands the fraction word form, a fraction as a part of a whole and as a part of a group as they work through the unit. You definitely want to avoid confusion over fractions and not introduce the fraction symbol too early! The pack contains posters and activity sheets to support the introduction of each fraction concept and then consolidates those tricky concepts with hands-on, motivating games and activities. Equal or Unequal card sort. Wholes and Halves (CCSS 1.G.A.3) Children develop an understanding of halves through partitioning shapes into two equal pieces and sorting halves and wholes. Worksheets 1. Partition the Shapes 2. Cut and paste the fraction cards into the correct columns. 3. Color one half of each shape. 4. Interactive notebook - Children partition the shapes into halves. Quarters/Fourths (CCSS 1.G.A.3) Children are introduced to quarters. There are worksheets and that help them identify quarters, partition shapes into quarters, and identify quarters, halves and wholes in a set. Equivalence is also introduced. After using the worksheets, let them play the games included. Worksheets 1. Partition the shapes into quarters. 2. Color the shapes that show quarters. 3. Color 1 quarter of each shape. 4. Cut and paste the shapes into the correct columns. 5. Interactive notebook - Children partition the shapes into quarters. 6. Cut and paste fractions of a set using wholes, halves and quarters. 7. Color the pictures to match the fractions (fractions of a set). 8. Color 1 half and 2 quarters and record the findings. (Equivalence of fractions) 9. The games included help consolidate the children’s knowledge of thirds, wholes, halves and quarters. Worksheets 1. Partition the shapes into thirds. 2. Color 1 third of each shape. 3. Color thirds of each shape or set. 4. Interactive notebook - Children partition the shapes into thirds. Games 1. Bumble Bees - Cover the correct fraction according to the spin. (1 half, 1 and 3 fourths/quarters, 1 and 2 thirds) 2. Alien Adventures - Children must say the fraction they have landed on. (wholes, halves, thirds and quarters) 3. Humpty’s Wall - Children color in the correct fraction according to their spin. (1 whole, 1 half, 1, 2 and 3 fourths, 1, 2 and 3 thirds) 4. Fraction Game - Children match the fraction card to the correct board. This game can be used with just the wholes, halves and quarters boards to make it suitable for grade one. 5. Fraction Hunt - Use the fraction cards to play ‘Scoot’ or use as a ‘write the room’ activity or simply place in your math center. A recording sheet is provided along with an answer key. The answer key is written both with using fraction names and fraction symbols (for older classes).
